UNFAILING LOVE - Valentine's Day 2015 February 13, 2015
"Yahweh! The Lord! The God of COMPASSION and MERCY! I am slow to anger and filled with UNFAILING LOVE and FAITHFULNESS. I lavish UNFAILING LOVE to a thousand generations. I FORGIVE iniquity, rebellion, and sin." Exodus 34:6-7
Valentine's Day is swiftly approaching. A day to celebrate love. But do we know what love is? Does this world have any concept what real love?
I am currently reading the book of Exodus, I have known the major stories but I have not had an intimate knowledge of this book. Tonight I read an amazing example of Gods GREAT, UNFAILING LOVE for His people.
Moses is up on the Mount with God. And while he is up there, the Israelites are getting anxious and testy. So they fall back to their "Egyptian" ways. They call upon Aaron to make them "gods, which shall go before them" (32:1) Aaron complies with the people and builds a bull. Which is the principal god of Egypt. Barely after God had thundered from the mountain tops, "Thou shalt have no other gods beside Me". And after all of the miracles God had done, delivering them out of Egypt, splitting the Red Sea, feeding them, providing water, conquering the battle with Amalek. God had done so much and in an instant, it's all forgotten and they are back to their old ways.
So God says to Moses, "Go, get thee down; for thy people, which though broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves" (32:7). Moses heads down the mount to see what is going on and he's got the two tablets of the 10 Commandments in his hands. These tablets, "were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tablets" (32:16).
WOW!!! Can you imagine holding these tablets that were written by the hand of God?!
Oh, well you know, Moses is human, and his temper flairs and he BREAKS the tablets!!
If you have never read this part of the Bible, or it's been awhile, read it. It's amazing.
Here we are in chapter 34 and God is instructing Moses to make two new tablets because God is going to write on them again. I'm in love with this God of mine. Because my initial reaction would be, you broke it, you fix it, not my problem! But not God, no. "He hewed two tablets of stone like unto the first; and Moses rose up early in the morning and went unto Mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone." (34:4)
I want to be live the example of God here. I am guilty of reminding my Beard (husband) when he has done something out of anger or annoyance. (Side note, the man has a lot of patience because I can get very annoying!) And I know, I know, "love keeps no record of wrong". But I am human, and sometimes I do. So here I am seeing, again, God mending what was broken, forgiving iniquities, and just loving on His people.
Let's live out God's love with COMPASSION, MERCY, may our prayers be that WE will be SLOW to anger. I need that as a wife and as I mom. And this Valentine's Day and every day, I want to teach my children that THAT is what LOVE is. And THAT can only come from God.
