The Adoption Ministry March 15, 2015
"And the King will say, 'I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!"
As I have prayed on what to share about adoption, I am overwhelmed at the job to adequately share on such a magnificent topic that has so many facets it can’t possibly be covered in a few paragraphs. Each adoption is uniquely different and so all I can really do is share what God has taught me as we have been through 5+ adoption processes. I have learned so much through each one of our adoptions, birth families, losses and also the testimonies of so many others. As I have went back and read through journaling I have done, I can’t help but see how much God has broken my heart, humbled me to my very core and taught me how nieve I was to it all. You see one thing I have learned is adoption is not just about growing your family when you can’t do it naturally. I will admit that is why Dave and I started out adopting, but oh the journey…God had so much more to teach this wanna be mom.
Adoption is not a flippant thought that should be thrown out when reflecting on the future or when you hear that a friend has adopted. It is to be approached with the utmost reverence and prayer. Adoption is a ministry full of many blessings and many obstacles! Satan would love nothing more than to devour adoption, but through God, each trial can be conquered! After all, our God is the designer of adoption! No matter which process you go through: Foster/Adoption, International or Independent. The process is costly! And I am not necessarily talking finances! It is literally dying to yourself to carry the hurt of the one who is letting go and gain an understanding of what empathy means. Sometimes it is loving even when every part of you wants to do the opposite. It is learning to love the way God loves. It is learning that your heart is deceitfully wicked and no matter how much you do in His name, you are still a broken sinner in need of a Savior. It is also learning to receive a gift that you are not worthy of! Adoption in its purest form is really teaching us what Christ did for us on the cross! It was love that kept Christ on the cross. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- and by His grace alone we are saved” (Ephesians 2:8) Nothing we could ever do would properly thank our birthmothers for their sacrifice just the same as nothing we could do to earn our salvation. The magnitude of both these gifts grieves me and yet gives me all the reason to rejoice!
One of the reasons I am so excited about Jena’s new ministry shirt design is because it is for everyone, not just those who adopt. You see, we are all called to the ministry of adoption! God commands us many times in the bible to care for the least of these. "Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you." James 1:27 Please understand that I am not saying that everyone needs to bring home a child, but we are to use our God given gifts to protect and care for our children. Whether that is signing up to babysit so I family can go to a training, providing meals, help with transportation, giving money, praying, fundraising, designing shirts, etc…the list goes on and on. It is about being the body of Christ and coming together in one accord. How precious that we can all be a part of God’s heart and ministry!
Let us all choose life! God is the author of life and He created it! He came that we may have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10)! Let us all choose love! “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8) Let us all choose adoption! “ For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.” Ephesians 1:4-6
As an adopted daughter of the One True King, I can’t wait to wear and share Jena’s new tee!! I am excited to see God move in this ministry and hers!!
